River Reclaimed Heart Pine

Colonial America was a land of wild untamed forests. American colonists realized the value of these rich natural resources. The Longleaf Heart Pine offered not only beauty and strength but also durability. Early Americans took advantage of this gift of the expansive pine forests. They cut and cleared the timbers. To ship the timbers to the closest sawmill they used rivers. However, due to the difficulty of transporting the giant timbers many were lost on river bottoms. The great timbers were irretrievable at that time in history. They have rested submerged and perfectly preserved for over a century until now. This River Reclaimed Heart Pine with its unique and time enhanced patina is desirable for its beauty and also for the pride it instills in its owner to share a lost treasure of history.

Reclaimed Heart Pine

Reclaimed Heart Pine or Antique Heart Pine is beautiful strong durable wood that is being reclaimed from warehouses, textile mills, and other edifices built over one hundred years ago. Reclaimed Heart Pine was originally produced from Southern Longleaf Pine trees in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s. During the Industrial Revolution the vast Southern forests were harvested rapidly. By the end of the Revolution most of these virgin forests had been depleted. Some of the forests still produce Southern Longleaf Pine but they are harvested as soon as they are large enough to produce lumber. It takes over 100 years of aging to produce the desired growth rings and patina found in Reclaimed Heart Pine. This abundant resource of the past is a valuable asset of the present. It is well worth the trouble of harvesting from older buildings. Many different industries rely on lumber, there is a great need for it. Using reclaimed Heart Pine is a way to reclaim the past and preserve the future in a beautiful, historical and elegant product.

Longleaf Heart Pine

Longleaf Heart Pine is one of the most popular selections for pine floors because of its dense grain pattern. A wood with character, Longleaf Heart Pine adapts beautifully to a formal or an informal room. It’s available in 4", 6", 8", and 10" widths and lengths are from 8’ to 16’. Longleaf pines have central columns that provide their support. This is the heartwood. The next layer is sapwood which carries water from the roots to the leaves. As the trees age, older sapwood cells become inactive and harden to make more heartwood to give the trees added strength. Longleaf pines are unique in that there is very little sapwood and the tall soaring trees are mostly composed of the strong heartwood. Rich in gold, red, and amber tones, Longleaf Heart Pine is nature’s masterpiece for a distinctive flooring.

Our Longleaf Heart Pine flooring is available in three different grades:

Vertical Grain Pine

Vertical Grain Pine flooring are planks that are sawn where the growth rings are perpendicular to the flooring wear surface. It has a harder wearing surface than common southern pine as the vertical grain pattern is stronger and more durable. Besides being desirable for high traffic areas in homes, such as kitchens or hallways, it is well suited for commercial or institutional flooring in offices, schools and other businesses. Vertical Grain is available in 4" widths. Many clients prefer quartersawn over hardwoods because of the availability of longer lengths that create less seaming. The deep beauty and durability of pine is enhanced again in a subtle way.
